Billy Beane Likes Larry
Ellison Connection
Billy
Beane, renowned for building one of baseball’s most
successful teams on a shoestring budget, will now test his
business acumen by joining the board of NetSuite, a rising
Silicon Valley company backed by software mogul and Oracle
co-founder Larry Ellison.
Beane
will remain the Oakland A’s general manager, a job that has
attracted more attention since his book, Moneyball: The
Art of Winning an Unfair Game.
His
appointment represents a public relations coup for NetSuite,
an internet-based maker of business management software that
is preparing for an initial public stock offering this year.
Undoubtedly Beane will be rewarded handsomely by
“getting-in” prior to the public offering, since holding
pre-IPO stock could well enable him to hit a grand-slam!
Beane
said he was drawn to NetSuite because of the Ellison
connection, as well as the company’s unorthodox approach of
selling online subscriptions to complex software programs,
instead of distributing them on discs that must be installed
on computer hard drives.
Not only has Ellison scored exceptionally well in other IPO
situations like this, but the returns generated by one of
NetSuite’s biggest rivals, Salesforce.com, have been
significant. And that will certainly be a favorable factor
in the coming initial public stock offering.

Entrepreneur Completes Job
For Pharmaceutical Company, Pocketing $229 Million
Here’s
a success story about a former employee of one of the
world’s large drug companies that reconfirms the power of
persistence and entrepreneurialism.
In the
$600 billion drug industry, major companies are under
intense pressure to make hefty profits. So they shy away
from the long shots, which is what Novartis did when it gave
up on a blood-pressure drug (aliskiren) in the mid-1990s.
When
the company decided it wasn’t economical to continue the
expensive research, Alice Huxley, a 49-year-old who had a
doctorate in biochemistry, and who had been working on the
drug’s research, quit her job at Novartis.
Believing she could solve the chemical riddles that would
lead to a blockbuster success, Huxley struck a deal with
Novartis to set up her own company and take rights to the
drug with her. Novartis’s own start-up venture fund gave Dr.
Huxley $3 million in seed capital, for her new company
Speedel Holding, reserving the right to buy the drug back.
Eventually Dr. Huxley and her staff solved the chemical
riddles, and her company went public in 2005. Her 22% stake
is now worth $229 million. Speedel Holding is presently
looking for other experimental medicines to buy, hoping to
repeat the success story.

New Measurement System
Offers Audience Data To Advertisers
An
integrated audience measurement system, the first of its
kind able to report real commercial data on the number of
people likely to see a given ad, has been developed by the
Traffic Audit Bureau (TAB).
The
new system, being implemented in phases, will provide
comprehensive measures of both pedestrian and vehicular
audiences with a complete rollout scheduled by third quarter
2008.
Despite being the oldest form of media, outdoor is changing
with the times, and is one of only two media (the other
being the Internet) currently exhibiting growth at a time
when questions are being raised about the measurement of
audience delivery in other media.
Until
now, researchers have been limited to reporting on a
person's opportunity to see a certain ad, but this latest
approach employs visibility, or “eyes on,” tracking to give
advertisers a much more accurate assessment.
It may
assess how many people are likely to see their message, be
it driving by a giant billboard or walking past a transit
shelter. The system will also report on audience
demographics for outdoor advertising in over 200 markets.
“This
is a change we have actively been working on for some time,”
said TAB President & CEO Joe Philport. “We sprang into
action amidst concerns that existing outdoor measurement
methods needed upgrading to keep pace with the demand for
greater accountability. We are surpassing all other
media...with a comprehensive system that provides a solid
foundation for future measurement.”
As
part of the first phase that is now under way, the TAB has
contracted with MediaMark Research (MRI) to initiate 4,200
detailed travel surveys in five markets—Chicago,
Philadelphia, Atlanta, Dallas and San Francisco—using
face-to-face computer-assisted personal interviews.
MRI
will also conduct nearly 50,000 surveys to collect
information about general travel patterns in a total of 15
markets. These high-quality techniques will be used to
gather comprehensive trip information, including routes
taken, mode of transportation, and purpose of each trip.
This study will also incorporate a viable approach to
measurement of pedestrian audiences.
Following a competitive search process that included
proposals from several leading companies from around the
world, MRI, Telmar, GfK Custom Research, and Transearch were
among those selected to work with the TAB on this project.
MRI
will design and execute the travel surveys, while GfK Custom
Research North America will conduct the research, Telmar
will provide modeling and analytic expertise, and Transearch
will be responsible for conducting the pedestrian component
of the study.

cash service fees on the hundreds of thousands of trade
dollars your hotel member will be paying the vendor. Contact
