Interconnected Barter Relationships Constitute Strong Company Infrastructure

When establishing an ongoing barter purchasing arrangement, it is necessary to be cognizant of your supplier's needs. For example, if you require $12,000 worth of a company's services on trade, you must guarantee them this amount of business each and every year  — without fail — because they expect it and rely on it.

To cement the relationship further, members of your staff should interact with their staff to assure smooth interaction; thus ensuring more profitability for your barter supplier.

With the above in place, the final consideration to be discussed with your supplier is the implementation of a cooperative effort regarding their spending appetite within the trade exchange. You and your supplier must both realize that the viability of your ongoing relationship revolves around their ability to spend the $12,000 you provide, as well as other business derived through the exchange.

It therefore behooves you (and the exchange's management) to assist your supplier in establishing their own long-term relationships with various exchange members. Because when such relationships are in place, there is less likelihood of running amok down the road.

Such planning is taking place in exchanges across the country, as astute business owners realize that strategic barter relationships transpose into greater profits for their companies. Furthermore, such alliances create a much stronger trade exchange, as these interconnected agreements constitute an infrastructure of enormous strength within the business community.

Study Shows Entrepreneurs Have Self Confidence

The annual "Voices of Small Businesses and Accountants Study," by the maker of Quicken and QuickBooks financial software, reported some very interesting and revealing information about our country's entrepreneurs.

Here’s a rundown on what they found:

  • During the past year, 64% of small businesses and 73% of accountants have invested money in their operations.

  • The most common investments were additional advertising or marketing at 40%new employees at 25%, and new technology at 23%.

  • The biggest challenges facing small businesses — according to their owners — are generating new business and revenue streams, rising insurance costs, and keeping up with competitors.

  • 75% of small business owners work with certified public accountants. Of those, 78% seek help with taxes and 37% obtain bookkeeping services from their CPAs.

Editor's note: It's interesting to see from this study the important role a trade exchange can play in the life of a typical small business. For example, their most common “investment” was for additional advertising and marketing. As a trade exchange member, you know that acquiring these desired services on barter is certainly a much better value than buying them with cash.

Even the biggest challenges of generating new business and revenue streams are addressed, because a trade exchange's major focus is providing a unique conduit for additional business and increased cash-flow … via trade dollars earned and cash saved.

Incorporate Barter Purchases This Holiday

It's time to organize your barter-spending list! As this holiday season is expected to be especially hectic, take action now to cement your barter spending. The following suggestions are intended to help make your holidays more enjoyable — and a little less stressful.

  • Check with your trade broker before you make a single cash purchase this holiday season. Remember, inventories at your trade exchange are continually changing and growing.
  •  Looking to put together a company party this year? Call your trade exchange broker ASAP.
  •  Your next call may be to one of the printers within the exchange to get your holiday invitations printed.
  •  Maybe you’ll want special banners for the office party.
  •  Also ask about available entertainment — musicians or a disc jockey make each event a little livelier and more fun.
  •  Other considerations include catering needs, balloons, flowers, a photographer, and a limo for invited VIPs.
  •  When looking to provide personal gifts, you'll want to ask about jewelry, a weekend getaway, a bed & breakfast, or possibly a health club membership.
  •  Don't forget gift certificates that cover the gamut from restaurants and selected merchandise to special events.
  •  Make sure to visit the trade exchange's Holiday Faire or Expo to view the wide variety of available merchandise.
  • Finally, consider your own special needs around this hectic time of the year. Set some time aside to get a tan, or visit a beauty salon for a hairstyle and manicure — yes, men too! And remember to enjoy this festive time of the year.
