Pursue The Passionate & Avoid The Zombies

By Mark Hopkins

Whether we like it or not, we become more like the people we spend the most time with — and most people's time is spent at work. Who you choose to spend time with in the workplace can affect your learning curve and, consequently, how prosperous you become. In order to learn everything you can to achieve your vision, you need to surround yourself with colleagues, employers and clients who are on fire — people who have a clear vision.

This is true of friends and even romantic relationships, but it's especially true of the people you work with. The goal is to accelerate learning while making it fun. Being with people you like who are also skilled and prosperous allows you to almost effortlessly develop the same skills that make them successful. The transformation happens through osmosis.

The people you choose should be admired for their determination, for the knowledge they’ve acquired, for the values they live by, and for their efforts to achieve success — not only in their job, but in their life. To help you spot those people, look for the following six attributes.

  • The proactive: Those who are designing their life with a plan in mind.
  • The goal-oriented: People who constantly give themselves something to work toward, and a way to build a sense of accomplishment.
  • The passionate: People who exude energy and ideas, and follow them through to achieve great things.
  • The curious: Those who are constantly exploring and learning, are multifaceted in their interests, and enjoy sharing what they’ve learned with others.
  • The unconventional: Those who are innovators, who ignore the naysayers and make their own paths.
  • The connected: People who may know other people whom you could turn to for career advice or help.

Spending more time with these kinds of people will not only provide you with a shorter path to prosperity, but will also be a lot of fun. So remember: pursue the passionate, avoid the zombies. Try it!

(Mark Hopkins is the author of Shortcut to Prosperity: 10 Entrepreneurial Habits and a Roadmap For An Exceptional Career. After building a leadership career with companies like Hewlett Packard and Emerson Electric, Hopkins founded Peak Industries, a medical device contract manufacturer, which he grew to $75 million and later sold to Delphi. He then founded Crescendo Capital Partners, a private equity firm, and Catalyst, a private foundation supporting both Colorado-based nonprofits and micro-lending in the developing world.)

Relaxation Essential To Your Success

Although as entrepreneurs we are driven to succeed, we need to realize that taking time to relax isn’t a gift just for ourselves — it's a necessary and indispensable part of performing at our peak. And it helps to keep us sane.

If you want to accomplish true success, you must take your own wellbeing seriously, realizing it’s easy to grow accustomed to an increased level of stress.

To avoid getting burned out, don’t just make relaxation an item on your to-do list, but learn to rejuvenate yourself creatively by:

→  Taking a break — even if just for a minute. Relaxation can take any length of time and whatever forms you find appealing. Simply tensing your muscles and allowing them to relax is an effective way to decompress. One way is to find a quiet place to lie down. Then uncross your legs and rest your palms on your stomach. Close your eyes and breathe deeply. Tense every muscle from the top of your head to your toes for a second. Then let go and simply clear your mind for a moment by picturing a serene landscape.

→  Making relaxation part of your routine. Take 15-minutes each day for you to reflect and have downtime. Achieve clarity by recognizing your successes, letting go of your stress, and deciding on the best step for you to take next.

→  Turning your frustration into inspiration. When obstacles cross your path, it’s much easier to get riled up than it is to calm down.
Instead of becoming aggravated about occurrences out of your control, relax and try to spot opportunities. Ask yourself, “How can this situation fuel my success?” You will be amazed at the possibilities you discover.

→  Saying no to less important things. You are in control of your to-do list, and therefore determine what the priorities are. Being able to say no to the less important items is a big part of your overall success, and people will respect your honesty.

Remember, pay attention to any physical or emotional symptoms that arise in response to stress. Then recognize that it's OK to relax, slack off, or get more sleep. Success comes from attaining your goals — and relaxation has to be one of them.
